They were in Lawrence County, AR , Stranger's Home Township, on the 1860 census. William Lingo was killed in the Civil War abt 1864. Clarissa Angeline married my great grandfather, William Henry Stiner sometime in 1864 in Posey County, Indiana where she had gone to be with her parents. Clarissa and Henry Stiner died in Gamaliel, AR and are buried there in the Fluty Cemetery.

From what records I have, Samuel Wallace Howard's mother was Georgia Ann Ruffner (b. about 1860, Lawrence Co. AR), daughter of Angus Ruffner. He must have lived on the border of Jackson and Lawrence Co., as he appears on some Lawrence Co., Census. Samuel's father was Samuel W. Howard born in Tennessee. He was born about 1854 (census says born in Arkansas), and mother was born in Illinois. After they left Arkansas in the 1850s they used the spelling HARER/HARRER. Evan HARER married Obedience McCLENDON ca 1818; Enos married ?Jennie Chapman Jane? CRAIG ca 1816; David married Mary "Polly" McCLENDON ca 1817; James (marriage unknown). Their father may have been a John HARROW/HARRAH?? We have been unable to document who the parents were of these men (supposedly there were two daughters as well i.e. Mary and Emily of whom we have no information). Tax Records as described in: Early Arkansas Residents, Tax Lists of the Counties of Arkansas and Lawrence in the Territory of Missouri 1814-1816 by James Logan Morgan/Marion Stark Craig M.D. Editor's Introduction: At the suggestion of David W. Bizzell, who was then the deputy county clerk of Pulaski County Arkansas, I wrote the Western Historical Manuscript Collection of the University of Missouri Library at Columbia, Missouri, in 1973, asking about records of the Arkansas counties created while the area was part of the Territory of Missouri. Nancy C. Prewitt, the assistant director, sent me copies of financial records of Arkansas District and Arkansas County, including the tax records of Arkansas County for 1814, 1815 and 1816. Soon afterwards, she located similar records for Lawrence County, including the 1815 and 1816 tax lists. Dr. Marion Stark Craig, of Little Rock, an authority on the history of Arkansas during the Louisiana-Missouri territorial period, prepared a card index to the tax lists. I intended to use the names in the index in a "reconstructed" 1820 census of Arkansas Territory. I later decided to narrow the coverage of my 1820 census reconstruction, and it has been completed, using records limited to the years 1818 through 1821. However, the 1814-1816 information has proved useful to me in my research, and I think it appropriate to make Dr. Craig's excellent index available to other historians and genealogists. James Logan Morgan In the index which follows, the principal name used is usually the name that appears on the tax list or lists. If a more likely spelling of the name was available, the more accurate name was indexed, while the name which appears on the tax list or lists was given in the "Notes" section. In several cases, more than one name was given in the tax lists. All entries were indicated, either in the principal index or in the "Notes" section. Arkansas County was created by an act of the Missouri territorial legislature passed December 31, 1813. (An earlier Arkansas District had been created in 1808, but was abolished in 1812.) Arkansas County was created from the southern part of New Madrid County. In 1818, the Missouri legislature divided the southwestern part of Arkansas County into three new counties - Pulaski, Clark and Hempstead. Lawrence County was created, also from New Madrid County, by an act approved January 15, 1815. As created, Lawrence County extended several miles beyond the present northern boundary of the state of Arkansas. In 1818, that part of Lawrence County north of the present state line was added to a part of Cape Girardeau County to form Wayne County. (The 1815 and 1816 tax lists were compiled while this northern part of Lawrence County was still attached.) When the Territory of Arkansas was created in 1819, it was composed of the following counties taken from the Territory of Missouri: Arkansas, Lawrence, Pulaski, Clark and Hempstead. Harrow, David Lawrence Co. 1816 I tried contacting the Western Historical Collection at the University of Missouri Library (per above) and their reply was that these tax lists cannot be located without more definite info re where in the Collection they are. Wells was born in Georgia 12-29-1850 and possibly moved to Lawrence County before Sharp County was separated. He also had a brother Samuel born in Arkansas on 9-28-1854. His wife was Mary. John also served in the Civil War with the Confederacy. Dortha's father was Joseph Calvin Kelly and her mother was Mary Francis Kelly. This was his second wife. The Wells' are buried at Nelsonville, near Poughkeepsie, and the Kelly's are buried at Spott's Cemetery, also near Poughkeepsie. They lived most of their life in Sharp County. John Riley Wells later moved to Lynn and Strawberry in Lawrence County. If anyone has any records or knowledge of these people, I would greatly appreciate any information that you can send me. The obit also stated that James Montgomery was buried at Cross Roads, Arkansas.
